Welcome Swedes!
Posted on 19th May, 2005 at 10:57pm by joel
Apparently the Swedish love me. Now, to find a bikini team member… think they’ll mind if I’m Danish?
I’m a shortstat addict. I like to keep an eye on the [paltry] traffic to my site, so I routinely check my shortstats all day long. Today shortly after 4pm, a huge string of referrals from cssdesign.se showed up. A quick click later and I discovered that I’d been singled out for…well, I’m not sure. I don’t know a lick of Swedish. All I know is that my site was posted on cssdesign.se and a whole bunch of people were coming to check it out. Judging from my typical visitation (which is rather pathetic), chances are you’re one of those people. If so, welcome! I’m Joel. Someone in your country decided my site was worth seeing. I’m attempting to fulfill that. Keep reading, please.
As I mentioned, I know no Swedish, though I do know where to go to get some Swedish translated. One of my former professors at St. John’s speaks and reads somewhere in the neighborhood of a dozen languages, including all the Scandinavian varieties. In my Norse Mythology class, he even revealed that he was in the process of translating a Swedish saga into English. But I digress…
It seems that I’m being singled out for something good that I’ve done with this site design. Running the page through a translator didn’t help narrow it down, though. Something about my site is “chewy” and I have a “groteskt big headern”. I was worried that maybe I was the “don’t do it this way” example in the mighty impressive list of sites. However, Pelle’s comment after mine gave me the reassurance I needed to know that I had, in fact, done something right.
So, the way I see it, I’m not going to rudely thrust my English upon the Swedish site (ignore the fact that I did so once already), but I’d also like to be as accommodating and helpful to my foreign visitors as possible. If anyone has any questions or comments about the techniques I’ve used or why I’ve done things how I’ve done them (yes, including the “groteskt big headern”!), feel free to ask away in the comments. English is the preferred language, though I do know a smidgen of Spanishhowever useless that may be.
Last, and probably least, I wonder if the fact that I’m Danish is going to winor loseme points with the Swedes. My veins run full of Scandinavian blood and my skin has a strong aversion to the color tan. However, I chose to attend German Catholic St. John’s University instead of the seemingly more appropriate Swedish Lutheran Gustavus Adolphus College to the south. I hope the bikini team doesn’t hate me for my decision. If so, that’ll be the last time I ever shirk the Swedes. I promise!
